Human Rights Council - Number of Protocols to the Geneva Conventions Ratified

The four 1949 Geneva Conventions and their two Optional Protocols form the cornerstone of International Humanitarian Law (the “laws of war”). Virtually every state has ratified the four Geneva Conventions. This table lists whether states have also ratified the Protocol Additional to the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949, and relating to the Protection of Victims of International Armed Conflicts (“Protocol I”), 8 June 1977 (ratified by 163 states) and Protocol Additional to the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949, and relating to the Protection of Victims of Non-International Armed Conflicts (“Protocol II”), 8 June 1977 (ratified by 159 states).
