FINANCES

During 1989, the financial support for Human Rights Watch and our expenditures for the year increased substantially. As in previous years, the largest part of our support came from foundations. Yet contributions from individuals and businesses also increased greatly, thanks in significant part to a successful fund-raising dinner in honor of human rights monitors worldwide that we held in New York in December 1989 in connection with our celebration of our eleventh anniversary.

Foundations providing support for Human Rights Watch during 1989 included the Aaron Diamond Foundation, the John and Catherine MacArthur Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the J.M. Kaplan Foundation, the Revson Foundation, the Overbrook Foundation, the John Merck Fund, the J. Roderick MacArthur Foundation, the Joyce Mertz-Gilmore Foundation, the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation, the Scherman Foundation and the Bydale Foundation.

Our fund-raising efforts during 1989, as during previous years, were led by Robert L. Bernstein, Chairman of Human Rights Watch. Many other members of the Watch Committees also played important roles. Marina Pinto Kaufman and Bruce Rabb served as Co-Chairs of the Committee which organized our December fund-raising dinner. Rachel Weintraub served as staff coordinator.

At the time this report was readied for publication, the annual audits for 1989 of the Fund for Free Expression and of Helsinki Watch, the two corporate entities through which Human Rights Watch operated, had not been completed. Unaudited figures show that foundation grants (exclusive of portions of multi-year grants intended for subsequent years) totalled $2,598,500; contributions from individuals and corporations totaled $1,482,535; other income (from literature sales, interest, etc.) totaled $319,216. The total was $4,400,251. Expenditures for salaries and payroll costs were $1,748,492; consultants/ researchers $245,031; rent $494,392; travel, missions and other field investigations $584,538; publications $194,408; office expenses (telephone, postage, equipment, supplies, photocopying) $708,303; fundraising and development $142,888; other expenses $26,758; and contribution to reserve fund $200,000 (from a foundation grant which specified this contribution). The total expenses were $4,344,810. The excess of income over expenses was $55,441.
