Human Rights Watch Annual Dinners 2005
Voices for Justice

The Human Rights Watch Annual Dinner, Voices for Justice, celebrates the valor of individuals who put their lives on the line to defend the rights of others.

This year, we salute three brave activists from Iran, Sudan, and Uganda—whose work exemplifies issues addressed by Human Rights Watch: creating a more open and democratic political culture in Iran; ethnic cleansing in Darfur; and the plight of women and children living with AIDS in Uganda. Human Rights Watch collaborates with these courageous human rights defenders to create a world in which people live free of violence, discrimination, and oppression.

In Europe, we will honor a second set of activists—one from the Democratic Republic of Congo, from Afghanistan and from Russia. The work of these courageous individuals has brought international attention to the deadly conflict in eastern Congo, which has killed more civilians than any since World War II; the lack of safety and security in Afghanistan; and serious abuses within the Russian military.

Human Rights Watch collaborates with these human rights defenders to create a world in which people live free from violence, discrimination, and oppression. All proceeds from these events benefit Human Rights Watch. For further information about the Annual Dinners, please contact Myriam Caryannis at carayam@hrw.org.
