Other Attacks along the Baku-Rostov Highway

For many fleeing civilians, the Baku-Rostov served as the main exit route to safety in Ingushetia. However, the journey on the Baku-Rostov highway continued to be highly dangerous. Said Khadzhimuradov told Human Rights Watch that he left Shatoi on November 16 at about 3:00 a.m., traveling in a van with fifteen people. At approximately 7:00 a.m., as the vehicle was passing the town of Kulary, five shots were fired at their vehicle from a Russian position located on the left side of the road. One of the shots hit the vehicle, seriously injuring four-year-old Eliza Khabaeva.63

Kharon Askhabov, aged thirty-five, left Urus-Martan for Ingushetia in a three-car convoy on November 15 at 7:00 a.m. While the convoy was passing Achkhoi-Martan, one of the cars was hit by a Russian shell, and all seven passengers in the car where killed: an old man, two women, and four children.64
