Tightening Control in the Name of Unity

The Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) is labeling possible political opponents "divisionist" and taking steps to silence them in order to ensure victory in upcoming elections. In late March President Paul Kagame warned that he would "wound" "divisionists" who threatened to undermine national unity and reprimanded foreign donors who give money to "people to teach divisions." Officials and press alike linked "divisionism" to the prospect of another genocide, thus heightening fears and tensions between the groups they profess to be unifying.
