VI. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

This report was researched and written by Pat Nyhan and Helen Epstein, consultants to the Africa division of Human Rights Watch. The report was edited by Helen Epstein, Peter Takirambudde, executive director of the Africa division, and reviewed by Joe Saunders, deputy program director, and Dinah PoKempner, general counsel. Production and coordination assistance was provided by Jeff Scott, associate in the Africa Division, Patrick Minges, Publications Director, and Fitzroy Hepkins, Mail Manager.

Research for the report was conducted on a field mission to Nairobi from September 1 to 19, 2002, as well as interviews in Washington, D.C., on August 14 and 15, 2002. Some sixty interviews were conducted with government officials, human rights activists, lawyers, journalists, clergy, foreign donors, members of international organizations and financial institutions, academics, and victims of human rights abuses. Human Rights Watch wishes to thank them all for taking the time to be interviewed and sharing their expertise, information, and experiences with us.

This report was made possible in part by a gift from Jean-Christophe Castelli, in memory of Ludovic Trarieux (1840-1904), Dreyfusard and co-founder of the League of the Rights of Man, 1898.
