Dweepa (NY Premiere) Directed by Girish Kasaravalli Produced in India, 2002 Running Time:132m Format: 35mm Genre: Drama Distributor:Girish Kasaravalli The pioneering Indian Kannada filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli whose work is often likened to that of Satyajit Ray, brings his newest film, Dweepa to this year's HRWIFF. This contemporary drama is set in the hills of Malenadu just as Monsoon season is about to start. Kasaravalli explores the difficult emotional and physical repercussions caused by displacement of local farmers by government construction of a large dam. Nagi, a young and feisty woman (played by acclaimed actress Soundarya) is married to Ganapa, a local priest, who refuses to leave his island no matter how high the water behind the dam rises. In a matter of days all of their neighbors have abandoned their homes and accepted the governments mediocre compensation for their land; conditions on the island become exceedingly dangerous, yet Ganapa, indignantly, refuses to leave. A young, local politician and native of the Island, comes to help Ganapa and Nagi save their land. However, this young man's interest in Ganapa and his land seem more than anyone bargained for. Dweepa won the 2002 prestigious best fiction film award in India. Copresented by Breakthrough: Building Human Rights Culture
