Tiananmen, 15 Years OnWhere Are Some of the “Most Wanted” Participants Today?
Zheng Xuguang, an engineering student at the Beijing Aeronautics Academy at the time of the 1989 pro-democracy movement, remains in China. He had tried to escape following June 4, but was picked up in July and sentenced in 1991 to a two-year prison term for counterrevolutionary propaganda and incitement. While struggling to make a living, Zheng continued his political activism. In 1993, he was held for ten months after he signed the “Peace Charter,” a document calling for human rights, political pluralism, and freedom for political prisoners. The following year, he signed a petition addressed to the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress calling for reversing the verdict that labeled the movement a “counterrevolutionary rebellion.” The document read in part, “The movement was a nationwide, popular, patriotic movement with young students as its main body. Within the movement we consistently adhered to the principles of peace, reason and nonviolence.” In 1995, Zheng was again briefly taken into custody after signing still another petition, this one calling for the government to release newly detained activists.
