A re-run of the mayoral election in Istanbul has given the opposition a big victory, a sharp rebuke to the the ruling party of increasingly authoritarian President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who once said, "whoever wins Istanbul, wins Turkey." But the country is already facing its next drama in the defense of democracy: the trial begins today of 16 people accused of organizing and financing peaceful protests which began in Istanbul’s Gezi Park in 2013.

The Philippines’ descent into an all-out human rights crisis, with thousands of extrajudicial executions and a crackdown on basic liberties, has generated an outcry, but no strong action, from United Nations members states.
