Tensions between the United States and the regime in North Korea have escalated again. Pyongyang is reportedly considering an attack on Guam, a strategically important US territory in the Pacific, after US President Donald Trump threatened the communist country “with fire and fury”, rhetoric that went far beyond the usual words that his predecessors used. Both countries have nuclear weapons.
Under the rule of Kim Jong-Un, North Korea remains among the world’s most repressive countries. China should not deport 15 North Koreans held in Chinese detention back to North Korea, but should either grant them asylum or allow them to safely go to a third country
There's also rare good news on China and human rights.
Tensions have risen in Kenya, now that opposition leader Raila Odinga claims that election systems have been hacked in favor of sitting president Uhuru Kenyatta. Millions of Kenyans went to the polls on Tuesday, and early results indicate a strong lead for Kenyatta.
Houthi-Saleh forces have repeatedly fired artillery indiscriminately into populated neighborhoods of Taizz, Yemen’s third largest city. At least 30 people died, and more then 160 were wounded during the attacks over a 10-day period in May.
Thailand’s military government has charged a reporter and two prominent political critics with sedition and computer crimes for Facebook commentary critical of the junta.
An independent journalist, Soltan Achilova, has been the victim of harassment and a series of targeted attacks and death threats in Turkmenistan.
Authorities in Oman should quash the conviction of Yusuf al-Haj, an editor at Azamn newspaper who was arrested nearly a year ago. Al-Haj must be released immediately, and the paper must be allowed to reopen.
And progress towards ending child marriage in Nepal appears to have ground to a halt, despite early hopes.
