Turkey's human rights crisis has come under deeper scrutiny following a referendum earlier this month that gave the president enormous power. For the first time since 2004, Turkey will be monitored for human rights abuses by the Council of Europe. Turkey has been under a state of emergency since last summer's coup attempt, and authorities have instituted a crackdown that has targeted civil society, the judiciary, and academics, among others.

Last weekend, Angolan police officers attacked a peaceful gathering of advocates demonstrating against Angola's lack of accessible infrastructure for people with disabilities. Leaked video footage shows one officer knocking a wheelchair-bound protester to the ground. It's sadly not the first time Angolan police have violently responded to peaceful protests.
United States President Donald Trump has asked Congress for $3 billion to fund an expansion of immigration detention centers and hire more border security and immigration enforcement officials. But his anti-immigrant agenda make these requests dangerous and potentially abusive. His request should be denied.
