Many schools across the United States remain hostile environments for LGBT students despite significant progress on LGBT rights in recent years. But in many US states, LGBT students have no legal protections from bullying and many teachers will not or cannot discuss LGBT issues. If students cannot talk openly about being gay in school, then they and their educators cannot openly confront discrimination, leaving LGBT youth at risk.
Kazakhstan has moved to shut down a trade union confederation that represents medical workers, domestic workers, and mine workers. The move poses a serious risk to worker's rights in Kazakhstan and the government should work with labor groups rather than treat them as a threat.

Rebels in Syria have left the last areas they held in Aleppo's old city, while calling for a five-day truce to allow the evacuation of civilians. Government forces now control about 75% of eastern Aleppo, but thousands of civilians remain trapped under siege, without food and medical supplies.
