ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

This report was researched in Angola in November and December 2002 by Tony Tate and Michael Bochenek, researchers in the Human Rights Watch Children's Rights Division. The report was written by Tony Tate and edited by Michael Bochenek and Lois Whitman, Executive Director of the Children's Rights Division. Peter Takirambudde, Andrea Lari, and Nadejda Marques of the Africa Division provided comments. Additional analysis was provided by Arvind Ganesan, Director of Business and Human Rights. Wilder Tayler, Legal and Policy Director and Joe Saunders, Deputy Program Director, also reviewed the report. Dana Sommers and Colin Relihan, associates in the Children's Rights Division, provided invaluable production assistance.

We wish to thank first and foremost the many children in the gathering areas and home communities for sharing their stories with us. Without their assistance, this report would not have been possible. We would like to thank them by name but doing so could jeopardize their security. We would also like to thank the adults both inside and outside the camps who provided valuable background information on their experiences and that of children in the war.

Our ability to conduct research in the UNITA areas was made possible through the assistance of government and military officials in the provinces and camp leaders in the gathering areas. A special thanks must be extended to members of the clergy who met with us and provided access to children. We were encouraged by their work and dedication to children's rights in Angola. We are grateful to the many individuals who agreed to meet with us including civil society leaders, national and international NGOs, and members of the press. We also wish to thank government officials in the Ministry of Social Welfare (Ministério da Assistência e Reinserção Social, MINARS) and the National Institute for Children (Instituto Nacional da Criança, INAC) in Luanda for meeting with us.

Human Rights Watch recognizes with appreciation funding for work on Angola from NOVIB. We would also like to thank the Oak Foundation and the Independence Foundation for their general support of our work on children's rights.
