Mikhail Ardzinov, Chairman of the Independent Human Rights Organization of Uzbekistan, was detained and severely beaten by police in June, 1999. The 63-year-old activist suffered a concussion, broken ribs, contused kidneys, and bruises and scratches on his face and body. Police denied him medical treatment and access to an attorney. He is shown here the morning after his release from over 12 hours of interrogation, threats and physical mistreatment by police. At the time of detention, officers confiscated Ardzinov's passport, archive of human rights documents and office equipment. These items still have not been returned.
