Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, Umar Abubakar drove a Maruwa (a commercial motorized tricycle) in Lagos State, Nigeria. The state government banned Maruwa in certain areas of the state in January 2020, depriving Abubakar of income even before Covid-19 hit. During the March to May 2020 lockdown, Abubakar struggled desperately to provide food for his wife and seven children, sometimes just drinking salt and water for meals.
