Andrea (a pseudonym) had a clandestine abortion at age 19. She bought pills at an underground pharmacy and experienced so much pain that she went to the hospital. The doctor who treated her said she knew Andrea had had an abortion, and administered local anesthesia before the procedure to remove tissue from her uterus. But the anesthesia didn’t work. Andrea said it was “the worst pain of my life.”
