The Olympic Council of Asia chose Ashgabat as the host of the 5th Asian and Indoor Martial Arts Games in December 2010. Demolitions for reconstruction, urban renewal, and beautification in Ashgabat have been constant for at least the past 15 years. This map of Ashgabat shows areas of the city where significant house demolitions, broken down into two periods—before and after 2011. While the map suggests the areas after 2011 may have been marked for demolition long before December 2010, it lso shows that demolitions clearly accelerated after 2011. ©2017 Human Rights Watch
