Many we interviewed described poor detention conditions, including a lack of sunlight, rampant malaria and other illnesses, and difficulty receiving medication. Abina O., who was deported to Cameroon (identifying information is omitted for her protection), said that all the guards were men: “We have to beg for sanitary pads. These policemen here, they have no regard for females, they just bang into the room, they just enter our rooms without knocking.”
