A 27-year-old Senegalese fisherman and returned migrant, photographed in Senegal in 2022, shows scars he said were from beatings in 2018 by Mauritanian authorities – officers in black uniforms, from an unknown security service – who intercepted him in a boat with around 50 other West Africans headed for Spain’s Canary Islands. He said officers beat him and seven other men who had served as “captains” of the boat, detained them for 15 days without due process, subjected them to forced labor, and expelled them to Senegal.
