Nina Shmeleva, fifty-seven, a journalist and activist of the unregistered Russian Community of Turkmenistan who had attempted to assist ethnic Russians trying to emigrate from Turkmenistan, was forced to confess to "financial fraud" and was sentenced in May to five years in prison (her sentence was later reduced to a six-year probation). |
