Conclusion

South Africa is at a crossroads. If it decides that the crimes of apartheid are to go unacknowledged and unpunished, then the result will be that they will continue to be committed, and will not be forgotten or forgiven. If, on the other hand, an honest and painful look at the responsibility for the abuses of the last fifty years is undertaken, then there may be at least a chance that it can transform itself into a "united, democratic and non-racial country, with justice and security for all its citizens."38
