Sufyian Barhoumi

Nationality: Algerian

Sufyian Barhoumi is a 34-year-old Algerian. He is accused of conspiracy to commit terrorism and providing material support for terrorism for providing instruction on building explosives. Barhoumi was arrested in March 2002 along with several other terrorist suspects when US and Pakistani forces raided a house in Faisalabad, Pakistan. He has been detained at Guantanamo ever since. If convicted, he faces life in prison.

This is the second time the US has tried to put Barhoumi on trial. On November 7, 2005, Barhoumi was charged with conspiracy before the military commissions, but those charges were thrown out in June 2006 when the US Supreme Court ruled that the military commissions were unlawful. In September 2006, Congress passed the Military Commissions Act, authorizing a new set of military commissions. The Convening Authority of the military commission must approve the charges before Barhoumi is formally charged.
