October 7 marks the two-year anniversary of the death of Anna Politkovskaia, a courageous Russian journalist who fearlessly challenged her government’s policies when she believed them unjust and exposed the grave human rights situation in Chechnya through her reporting. On October 7, 2006, she became a victim herself when she was murdered, many believe, in retribution for her work.

According to the newspaper Novaia Gazeta, for which she wrote at the time of her death, she was working on an article about torture in Chechnya that was to be published in the paper's October 9, 2006 issue. Her killing on October 7 was likely linked to this report.

Two years on, the perpetrators of her murder have yet to be brought to justice.

The human rights community mourns the loss of her voice and determination to report from one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists.
