    image002

The separation barrier in the form of a 26-foot high concrete wall near the town of Qalqilya, shown here under construction in May 2003. The 41,000 residents of Qalqilya are now completely encircled, able to enter and exit through a single gate. The separation barrier also takes the form of a wall around the western side of Tulkarem (pop. 63,000), where it runs for 11 kilometres. Tulkarem is a major center for social services. Qalqilya and Tulkarem both lie on the Green Line, the 1948 de-facto boundary between Israel and the Occupied Territories. © 2003 Agence France Presse
