On October 9, 2007, Human Rights Watch announced the launch of its Paris office at a news conference held at the prestigious Institut d'Etudes Politiques (IEP), also known as "Sciences Po". The news conference was attended by Kenneth Roth (Executive Director of Human Rights Watch), Jean-Louis Servan-Schreiber (Chair of the Paris Committee) and Jean-Marie Fardeau (Director of the Paris office). On this occasion, Human Rights Watch outlined its priorities for its work in France for the remainder of 2007 and for 2008. News release...

The Paris Committee, created in October 2007, helps to inform the French public on human rights violations throughout the world, and aids in raising funds for Human Rights Watch. The Committee is chaired by Jean-Louis Servan-Schreiber. Its members reinforce Human Rights Watch's advocacy efforts through its contacts with leaders in the French political, business and media community, as well as potential donors.

 

First "Voices for Justice" Annual Dinner

Human Rights Watch held its first "Voices for Justice" Annual Dinner in Paris on November 15, 2007 in the restaurant Les Ombres at the Musée du Quai Branly. Each year, in New York and in several other cities where it has offices, Human Rights Watch hosts Annual Dinners in honor of well-known human rights advocates. The dinner was introduced by Kenneth Roth, who has led Human Rights Watch since 1993 and has boosted its international profile. Olivier Bercault, a researcher in the Emergencies division, discussed the work of this division, in particular in Darfur.

My Heart is Cut, a report on Côte d'Ivoire

Each year, Human Rights Watch publishes detailed reports concerning human rights violations in several countries throughout the world. Several reports on Francophone Africa were published in French in 2007, including Mon coeur est coupé (My Heart is Cut) on sexual violence in Côte d'Ivoire, Au bas de l’échelle (At the Bottom of the Ladder) on girl domestic workers in Guinea, Ils sont venus pour nous tuer (They Came To Kill Us) on attacks by militias and ethnic violence in eastern Chad, andEtat d'anarchie (State of Anarchy) on the violence in the North of Central African Republic. In June 2007, Human Rights Watch also released Au nom de la prévention (In the Name of Prevention), on the expulsion by France of certain foreign residents on national security grounds.
