The California Committee of Human Rights Watch was formed in 1987 in the belief that unique talent, influence and resources of California could be mobilized in defense of those whose human rights are being violated. In 1996, the California Committee launched new initiatives to generate support for our work and expand our visibility and financial resources. A vibrant, diverse, and rapidly expanding group of Human Rights Watch Young Advocates is planning a program of activities in Los Angeles, at the same time as they develop their skills to monitor, document, and advocate for human rights improvements in Southern California and abroad. The California Committee has recently organized a local support group for the HRW Women's Rights Division and welcomes new members. These two groups have recently co-produced a Critical Issues Seminar on the issue of trafficking of women and children. An expanding University Program will strengthen our ties with the academic communities in the area. In addition, the California Committee sponsors a number of public events each year in its ongoing campaign to create broader and more engaged public support for Human Rights Watch and the human rights cause.
