But as the recent cases of human rights defender Narges Mohammadi and women\u2019s rights activist Saba Kordafshari show, authorities\u2019 harassment is not limited to being prosecuted for \u201ccrimes\u201d of peaceful dissent. With signs there might be potential for greater international engagement with Iran, it is critical that Iranian authorities feel international pressure to drop these abusive tactics.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EMohamadi is a prominent human rights defender who was \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2020\/10\/08\/narges-mohammadi-released-from-prison-iran-coronavirus-human-rights-death-penalty\/\u0022\u003Ereleased\u003C\/a\u003E from Zanjan prison last October after serving \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2016\/10\/01\/iran-10-year-sentence-confirmed-prominent-rights-defender\u0022\u003Esentences\u003C\/a\u003E handed down by Tehran\u2019s revolutionary court after flawed trials for charges such as \u201cpropaganda against the state\u201d and \u201cestablishing an illegal group.\u201d Yet according to the Iranian human rights group \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/twitter.com\/hra_news\/status\/1354373978274607115\u0022\u003EHrana\u003C\/a\u003E and family \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/twitter.com\/rahmanitaghi\/status\/1354344414731186182\u0022\u003Emembers\u003C\/a\u003E, authorities are imposing an arbitrary travel ban on Mohamadi, preventing her from obtaining a passport and traveling abroad to visit her children who live in Paris despite her being released from prison for two months.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EKordafshari was \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2018\/11\/05\/iran-protesters-sentenced-unfair-trials\u0022\u003Esentenced\u003C\/a\u003E in 2018 at the age of 19 to a total of 24 years in prison in an unfair trial, along with at least 23 protesters, on vaguely-defined national security charges. The only evidence presented against her were social media posts reporting on protests in Iran. Hrana reported on January 27 that Kordafshari suffered \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/twitter.com\/hra_news\/status\/1354362585617981442\u0022\u003Einjuries\u003C\/a\u003E after being beaten when she was transferred to Qarchak prison. Despite also having several digestive issues, Kordafshari has been \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.hra-news.org\/2020\/hranews\/a-27043\/\u0022\u003Edenied\u003C\/a\u003E access to adequate medical care. And this despite the fact she and other human rights defenders shouldn\u2019t even be in jail in the first place for peaceful dissent. Kordafshari and others\u2019 peaceful dissent shouldn\u2019t have resulted in their jailing in the first place, much less this treatment.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003C\/div\u003E\n\u003C\/div\u003E\n\n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n\u003C\/div\u003E\n","settings":null},{"command":"insert","method":"prepend","selector":".js-view-dom-id-blog_live_feed__blog_body_block__377712__en","data":"","settings":null}]
