In September, Salt Lake City police responded to a request for help from the mother of a\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/09\/09\/910975499\/autistic-13-year-old-boy-shot-by-salt-lake-city-police\u0022\u003E13-year-old boy\u003C\/a\u003E with autism who was in emotional distress. Police shot the unarmed boy, who reportedly feared police, in the back multiple times as he ran from them.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EState and local governments should end the use of police to respond to incidents involving people experiencing\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7348421\/\u0022\u003Emental health crises\u003C\/a\u003E and instead implement non-coercive, supportive interventions. This can include response teams designed to connect, build rapport, and de-escalate stressful situations. Investment in communities, including accessible, affordable mental health services and support to address social issues that exacerbate stress and anxiety, are also essential.
