He was held in pretrial detention for more than three months, until the military investigative judge closed the case against him on May 29, 2018and charged two people with falsely accusing him.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EDetails of Itani\u2019s interrogation and the accusations against him leaked to the media within a day of his arrest, and Itani \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2018\/07\/16\/lebanon-exonerated-actor-details-torture\u0022\u003Edescribed the leak\u003C\/a\u003E as \u201cthe biggest form of torture I\u2019ve seen in my life. They took my phone as I sat in my cell and read the news and my friends\u2019 Facebook posts about me. I lost hope.\u2026 The psychological torture and words they used were more horrible than the physical torture.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EOn November 20, 2018, Itani \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2019\/04\/12\/lebanon-refer-torture-case-civilian-court\u0022\u003Efiled a civil lawsuit\u003C\/a\u003E with the State Prosecutor\u2019s Office against the people accused of framing him and the State Security officials who conducted the preliminary investigation, who he claims tortured him. On November 28, 2018, State Prosecutor Samir Hammoud referred his complaint to the military prosecutor on the grounds that the complaint is directed against security officers. After his first hearing on April 12, 2019, the military prosecution decided to return the case to the civilian judiciary. Since then, Itani said, there has been no progress on his case.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ELebanon\u2019s \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2017\/11\/13\/lebanon-new-torture-law-positive-incomplete\u0022\u003E2017 anti-torture law\u003C\/a\u003E criminalizes torture and includes special procedures for investigating allegations of torture.
