I felt that unease, the kind you might feel while walking alone at night in a dark part of town. At the same time, I knew this unease was irrational, as I had no idea who these men were. He’s from El Salvador, a country plagued by gang violence since before he was born. Both because of the police and the gangs,” he told me. “If the police think you are with the gangs, they kill you. If a gang thinks you’re not from their area and you cross a line, they kill you,” he said. When William heard about the caravan, he decided to leave.

The same applied to many others. And in the coming days, I’ll share with you some of their individual stories.

They’re the stories of people who have come to the US border for different reasons, in hopes of different things. By no means are they part of a monolithic group. And by no means do they all qualify for protection or legal status in the United States or in other countries. William said it best: “It’s not all good people here, there are also bad people, but we all came peacefully.”

And here’s the thing: No one can know any of that without talking to each and every one of them.
