This has taken the form of threats to repeat the “2008 violence” if the ruling ZANU-PF loses the July 30 elections; “deal” with opposition supporters after the elections; evict opposition supporters (mainly National Patriotic Front (NPF) and the MDC Alliance) from the communities; directives to village headmen (traditional leaders) to record and keep a list of names of all opposition supporters; and, demands for opposition supporters to hand over their party t-shirts and “repent” from supporting the opposition. In some rural districts ZANU-PF officials allegedly refused to give food aid or farm inputs to opposition supporters, giving only registered voters who pledged to support ZANU-PF.

Click to expand Image

<use xlink:href="/themes/custom/hrw_design/dist/app-drupal/assets/spritemap.svg?cacheBuster=250315#sprite-expand" />

ZANU-PF officials in party t-shirts at Bopoma, Zimbabwe where they allegedly denied social welfare food aid to several NPF supporters.

© 2018 Human Rights Watch

For instance, today, in Mashonaland East, Chikomba Central Constituency, villagers told Human Rights Watch that a Ward 17 ZANU-PF councilor demanded that all people receiving food aid at Masasa in Chivhu should pledge to vote for ZANU-PF and present their voter registration slips.
