major labor strikes. \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.the-star.co.ke\/news\/2017\/06\/12\/nurses-issued-sack-notice-as-strike-enters-second-week_c1578614\u0022\u003ENurses at public hospitals\u003C\/a\u003E have been on strike since June, while \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.standardmedia.co.ke\/article\/2001245945\/all-activities-paralysed-in-public-universities-as-staff-resume-strike\u0022\u003Euniversity lecturers walked off work\u003C\/a\u003E on July 3 \u2013 just four months since the end of a \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/erepo.usiu.ac.ke\/bitstream\/handle\/11732\/912\/agade.pdf?sequence=4\u0026amp;isAllowed=y\u0022\u003E100-day doctors\u2019 strike\u003C\/a\u003E that paralyzed all public hospitals earlier this year.\u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cbr\u003E\n\tThese strikes have significant impact on the right to health and education in Kenya. In June, an anonymous doctor at the Coast General Hospital told Reuters the hospital would only treat serious cases until the issue was resolved. Similarly, students say the university strike has made it impossible for them to adequately \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/2017\/07\/students-urge-quick-solution-end-varsity-lecturers-strike\/\u0022\u003Eprepare for upcoming exams\u003C\/a\u003E. Yet the right to strike is of \u201c\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/NewsEvents\/Pages\/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=21328\u0026amp;LangID=E\u0022\u003Eutmost importance\u003C\/a\u003E\u201d in democratic societies, and Kenya\u2019s unions do have substantive grievances against the government.\u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cbr\u003E\n\tLabor unions representing nurses and lecturers insist they only went on strike after the government failed to implement an agreement on increased salaries and better working conditions. The government argues it needs time, and will implement the worker\u2019s demands over a two-year period.
