Leave aside, for the moment, the political, economic, human rights, and humanitarian crisis that pushed thousands into the streets in protest. Today, security forces used \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/twitter.com\/Proiuris_Ve\/status\/854761966497345536\u0022\u003Eforce\u003C\/a\u003E and deployed \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/twitter.com\/CNNEE\/status\/854762884596994048\u0022\u003Eteargas\u003C\/a\u003E against demonstrators, and dozens of people have been \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/twitter.com\/Proiuris_Ve\/status\/854781506711171073\u0022\u003Edetained\u003C\/a\u003E. Journalists covering the protests reported suffering harassment at the hands of \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/twitter.com\/espaciopublico\/status\/854726401651601409\u0022\u003Esecurity forces\u003C\/a\u003E and pro-government \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/twitter.com\/espaciopublico\/status\/854712429250584576\u0022\u003Esupporters\u003C\/a\u003E, and a TV cable channel that reported on the protests was taken \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/twitter.com\/espaciopublico\/status\/854802655050420228\u0022\u003Eoff the air\u003C\/a\u003E. At least one person was killed \u2013 a 17-year-old boy who was reportedly not participating in the demonstrations died after being \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-venezuela-politics-idUSKBN17L178\u0022\u003Eshot\u003C\/a\u003E in the head.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThis was totally foreseeable. Today\u2019s protests unfolded amid explosive tensions, in a country where security forces have brutally repressed anti-government demonstrations, sometimes in collaboration with armed pro-government groups. Before today\u2019s demonstration, President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro \u2013 invoking his \u201cdefending peace\u201d slogan \u2013 \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VX6xd1GkoNg\u0022\u003Eaccused\u003C\/a\u003E the opposition of engaging in \u201cviolence, conspiracy, [a] coup d\u2019etat, and interventionism.\u201d He \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2n1_jEfvfIQ\u0022\u003Eannounced\u003C\/a\u003E he would multiply the number of pro-government militias and arm them, while organizing parallel pro-government demonstrations to counter the opposition\u2019s one.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EIn advance of today\u2019s protests, the region\u2019s eyes were on Venezuela.
