Omar Sirri

Iraq Researcher, Middle East and North Africa Division

Omar Sirri is the Iraq researcher for Human Rights Watch. Before taking up this role, he was an Affiliated Scholar with the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs at the American University of Beirut.

Omar has been writing on Iraq for more than a decade. His most recent research, published as a working paper with the LSE Middle East Centre, explored social-spatial transformations in contemporary Baghdad.

Omar holds a BA in political science and international relations from the University of British Columbia, an MSc in Middle East politics from SOAS University of London, and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Toronto. His doctoral dissertation was an ethnography of urban checkpoint practices in Iraq’s capital city.
