Nic Dawes currently serves as the Managing Director (Acting) and Deputy Executive Director for Media at Human Rights Watch. In his role Deputy Executive Director for Media he heads the organization’s digital, multimedia, and external communications work, and is leading the development of HRW’s approach to technology and Artificial intelligence. In his capacity as Acting Managing Director he is responsible for the organization’s strategic planning, directly manages the operational side of HRW including, Finance, Human Resources and IT. He is also responsible for the development, implementation, and oversight of policies and standards across the entire organization. Prior to HRW, he served as the Chief Content Officer at India’s Hindustan Times, where he was responsible for a far-reaching digital transformation, and Editor-in-Chief at South Africa’s leading political and investigative newspaper, the Mail & Guardian.
He is the recipient of Sikuvile, Mondi, Taco Kuiper and National Press Club awards.
As chairperson of the South African National Editor’s Forum he has been an activist for press freedom and freedom of information in his home country, working to forestall regulatory and legislative efforts to curtail media independence.
