For years, Hungary’s ruling party, Fidesz, has been undermining the fundamentals of democracy - rule of law, free media, independent courts and civil society groups, and academic freedom - all while being a member of Europe's center-right party group, the European People’s Party (EPP). But the EPP is finally waking up to the threat Fidesz poses to European values, with over a dozen member parties now calling for Fidesz to be expelled from the group. The EPP will decide the matter on March 20, and the votes of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU), as well as France’s Les Républicains, will be vital. They should take a stand for democratic values and vote to #ExpelFidesz.
If Hungary’s Fidesz cannot respect basic human rights – it should NOT be allowed to stay in the European People’s Party.
