He was abducted from Lampung in March 1998 and the authorities denied any knowledge of his whereabouts. On 17 April he emerged in police custody in Jakarta but there has still been no clarification concerning his initial arrest and detention. There are as yet no formal charges against Andi Arief although the police stated that he is in detention in connection with a bomb blast in a Jakarta flat in January 1998. |
