Dear school board member,

Every day, students who identify as or are perceived to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender suffer relentless harassment and physical attacks. This abuse has a devasting impact on youth—their grades drop, they may become depressed, some quit school, and a few commit suicide.

Every child deserves to be treated with respect and to be protected from violations of his or her basic human rights. All youth have the right to be free from discrimination, harassment, and violence in their schools.

The board should ensure that schools in the district are safe places for all youth. It can begin by conducting a review of all policies to make sure that they protect against harassment and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. It should also ensure that all school staff and students understand and abide by school nondiscrimination policies.

Sincerely,
