(01/17/01) -- Human Rights Watch today condemned the sentences handed down by an Iranian Revolutionary Court against Akbar Ganji and six other leading reformists. In a letter to Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi-Shahroudi, head of Iran's judiciary, Human Rights Watch said the sentences were arbitrary and extremely harsh, and the defendants were being punished solely for expressing views critical of the government.

The conspiracy charges against them had no basis in fact, and the secret trials were a travesty of justice. This prosecution was designed solely to punish people for expressing independent views -- and intimidate others from speaking out.
