Put Human Rights "into Practice"

The Clinton Administration should do more to put its annual human rights report into practice, Human Rights Watch urged today.  

We're glad that the State Department made a special effort on human rights today. But what is the Clinton Administration doing about human rights the other 364 days of the year? The State Department releases its annual human rights report February 26 at 11:00 am.  
 
"We're glad that the State Department made a special effort on human rights today," said Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch. "But what is the Clinton Administration doing about human rights the other 364 days of the year? It's all very well to report that a country is abusing human rights. But the U.S. government then ought to act on that information."  
 
Roth urged the U.S. government to use diplomatic, political, and economic means to put stronger pressure on countries that abuse human rights. He welcomed yesterday's unanimous Senate vote calling on the Administration to sponsor a resolution condemning China's human rights practices at the upcoming session of the United Nations Human Rights Commission in Geneva.
