Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said he would back a ceasefire with Russia beginning Friday afternoon if dates are set for peace talks in Minsk, Belarus. The main topic at a NATO summit in Wales today was the crisis in Ukraine, and western leaders strongly stated their support of Kiev in the face of Russian aggression. 

It’s the residents of Luhansk, in eastern Ukraine, who have been in the crossfire between Ukrainian troops and Russia-backed rebels for the longest. 

A leading US tobacco growers’ organization is now opposing hiring children under 16 to work on tobacco farms. Human Rights Watch’s research showed that, in the US, children ages 7 to 17 worked on tobacco farms, where they were exposed to pesticides and extreme heat. Most said they got sick while working, with headaches, vomiting, and dizziness – symptoms consistent with acute nicotine poisoning.

Up until a few days ago, Islamic State militants held the Iraqi town of Amerli under siege. At least 13 civilians, including newborn infants, died from lack of food, water or medical treatment.

The UK government should address, not dismiss, evidence that employers have abused migrant domestic workers in the UK. A draft law before parliament is aimed at combating forced labor and other criminal offences but does not address a visa system that contributes to the abuse of migrant domestic workers by their employers.

Burma released information collected in it’s first census since 1983. But the country didn’t release information on religion or race, for fear of further inflaming the violence that has rocked the country since 2012, when over 140,000 stateless Rohingya Muslims were displaced in a largely one-sided communal conflict.

Israel is illegally appropriating of a large swath of land in the occupied West Bank south of Jerusalem for settlement construction. But transferring civilian settlers into occupied territory would amount to a war crime, which is another reminder why the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, should immediately grant the International Criminal Court jurisdiction.
