An indefinite ceasefire has been called in Gaza today, although air strikes continued up until the moment the ceasefire took effect. One of the next questions is, when will there be justice for civilians killed during the conflict? 

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Russia’s Vladimir Putin met today for the first time since the onset of the escalating conflict involving Russian-backed separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine. Their meeting took place in Belarus, as part of a Eurasian Customs Union summit. Separately, the Russian military says Russian soldiers who were captured in Ukraine were there “by accident.” 

Three Vietnamese dissidents received two- and three-year prison sentences today – for obstructing traffic. The authorities should recognize these cases are not worth the international ridicule such trumped-up charges will cause and drop the charges immediately.

Across India today, people from some communities that are considered low-caste “untouchables,” or Dalits, are expected to practice “manual scavenging,” the collection and disposal of human waste. They face significant barriers to leaving this role, including those imposed by local government officials, a new Human Rights Watch report shows.
