It’s clear that what’s happened in Ferguson in the last two weeks is not only about Michael Brown, the 18-year-old African-American shot and killed by a police officer. Nor is it entirely about the Ferguson Police Department. It's also about frustrations voiced by Ferguson's black residents about the lack of respect with which some officers treat them, and the perception that police officers seem to place little value on the lives of black people. The problems are compounded by the difficulty of holding police officers accountable in cases of brutality. 

The death toll in Syria has reached 191,000 in April, the United Nations says. The country’s civil war begin more than three years ago. Syrians on all sides deserve justice, and the situation in Syria should be referred to the International Criminal Court.  

One year ago this week, hundreds were killed in a chemical attack on a Damascus suburb. Justice remains elusive for these victims as well. Evidence strongly suggests that Syrian forces carried out the attacks
A twitter campaign, #rememberingjim was launched in memory of James Foley, the US journalist reportedly killed by Islamic State militants in Syria. If confirmed, his death is a war crime. 
During an alleged confrontation, military personnel opened fire on 22 civilians who were inside an empty warehouse in the municipality of Tlatlaya, state of Mexico, killing all of them. The killings should be investigated. 
German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s trip to Ukraine this coming Saturday -- her first since the Russia-supported insurgency in the east began -- will be seen as an important sign of support for President Petro Poroshenko. Merkel should use this visit as opportunity to denounce violations of international humanitarian law by the Ukrainian military.
