(Left): The Transfiguration Cathedral, built to replace a historic church demolished by the Soviet authorities in the 1930s, has played a central role in the life in the city of Odesa, Ukraine, and its style reflects a blend of cultures. © 2012 Serhii Odiyanenko. (Right): In July 2023, an explosive weapon fired by Russian forces detonated in the altar area of the Transfiguration Cathedral in Odesa. The blast and resulting fire caused walls to crumble, wall paintings and icons to burn, and parts of the roof to collapse.
