The ODM won a large majority of parliamentary seats and many sitting Members of Parliament associated with the corruption and mismanagement of the Moi era lost their seats.  Still, the presidency was not in their hands.  On December 31 Raila Odinga and his ODM party called for peaceful demonstrations in Uhuru Park in central Nairobi to protest the 'illegal' swearing-in of Mwai Kibaki as president.  In other major towns, such as Mombasa shown here, protests also occurred. The government declared the protest itself illegal and police sought to turn back the crowds.
