News Release
The opposition ODM rejected the result. The European Union Election Observers commented that, 'some doubt remains as to the accuracy of the result of the presidential election as announced today.' There were many more votes cast for the presidency than for the parliamentary vote. The European Union and other observers noted discrepancies between the results announced at the polling station level and in the capital. There were riots in the major cities of Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu and Eldoret. Riotors burned homes of ethnic Kikuyu, Kibaki's tribal group. Because of the density of the slum housing, whole neighborhoods caught fire and people from all tribes lost their homes and businesses, like this corner of Kibera slum in Nairobi. Similar fires occurred in Mathare slum in Nairobi, Kisumu and in other parts of the country. © 2008 Reuters
