Kenya: End Police Use of Excessive Force Human Rights Watch
News Release
After intense international pressure, John Kufour, president of Ghana and current chairman of the African Union, arrived to mediate talks between presidential candidates Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga. However, as Kufour arrived at the airport, Kenyan television announced that Kibaki had appointed half of his government. This sparked further riots across Kenya and attacks on another ethnic group, the Kamba, because the Vice President announced by Kibaki is from that tribe. Kenyans remain disillusioned and the country is tense. As long as there is a political stand-off tension will continue and the possibility of further human rights violations will remain high. © 2007 Reuters
