Another opposition rally called for January 3, 2008 was banned by the government. Police dispersed protesters using tear gas, water cannon and sticks.  Further smaller protests continued over the next few days in the slums of Nairobi as well as in Kisumu.  Police continued to use live ammunition to disperse protesters.  Human Rights Watch interviewed an unarmed bystander, age 22, who was shot in the leg when he happened to come across a standoff between police and protesters in Mathare slum. © 2008 Reuters
