Outside the Frame: Photographs by Children on display June 5th-27th, 2003 at the Frieda and Roy Furman Gallery at the Walter Reade Theater There is an innate honesty in children about the environments in which they live, even when they are some of the most difficult situations imaginable. Give a child a camera and a little bit of guidance and some of the most remarkable and articulate images can be produced - by the children of abused prostitutes in Sonagachi, India; by orphans of the Rwandan genocide in Gisenyi, some without a last name; by children raised in and around garbage dumps in Guatemala City. Outside the Frame: Photographs by Children is an introduction to the worlds of marginalized children in many countries throughout the world through their own imagery. The most remarkable thing about these children is not the extreme circumstances under which many of them live, but that many of these new visionaries had never held a camera before. Yet they make more interesting, more arresting images than the great majority of professionals. Three selections from Outside the Frame are presented in conjunction with the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival: "Through the Eyes of Children: The Rwanda Project," "The Kids of Sonagachi: Photographs by the Children of Calcutta's Red Light District," and "Fundación de Niños Artistas (Fotokids)" in Guatemala. This exhibition was organized by PixelPress, a new media company for social change based in New York City. It is part of the larger project Outside the Frame: Photographs by Children, which will include a book, a Web site, a major traveling exhibition and an educational curriculum.
