Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking highly-qualified applicants for the position of Grantwriter.
 
 
Description:
Reporting to the Director of Foundation Relations. The Grantwriter will raise funds from foundations and individuals with programmatic interests, which together account for about half of the organization's $37.5 million annual budget. As a member of the six-person foundation relations unit of HRW’s Development and Outreach Department, the Grantwriter will work closely with senior development, program and executive staff. S/he or she will research and write proposals, stewardship reports and other materials for existing donors and prospective new ones, and assemble budgets and financial reports in cooperation with finance staff. The Grantwriter will develop relationships with HRW’s program staff and form relationships with foundation program officers. S/he will keep abreast of HRW’s research and advocacy activities and inform current and prospective donors of programmatic developments. The Grantwriter will also identify and solicit new sources of support by creatively matching HRW’s programs with donors’ funding priorities.  
 
Qualifications: HRW seeks experienced applicants with superlative writing skills with the ability to assimilate and convey conceptually complicated goals and strategies in a succinct and compelling way. Grantwriting experience in an advocacy organization is strongly preferred and familiarity with international human rights and the philanthropic community is highly desired. A Bachelor’s degree is required; academics are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will be a person who thrives in an intense fast-paced atmosphere in which deadlines are frequent and a collegial person who can work well with a broad spectrum of people and issues.
